4. Double Page Spread Analysis

This is a Double Page Spread of a magazine called NME.

This double page spread looks like a band review. They used 7 pictures which I think that it is very scattered to maybe reflect on the type of genre this music magazine is.
The main image is coloured, however the rest are in monochrome, which gives a touch of classic into it. Its a four column format to follow the codes and conventions of a magazine.
I find this page very simple yet sophisticated because of the way the images are laid out on the page.

4. Contents Page Analysis

This is a Contents page of an NME magazine.

The house style of this magazine is still kept the same which is the same as the one on the front cover, (black, white and red).
I find this page cluttered and full of text, which I think that its not appropriate for a contents page. This could be done on purpose so that it is attractable for the target market of rock music and also so that it is not out of place of the main theme.
The text of this magazine are clear, and bold to suggests the boldness and angriness of this magazine which reflects on the music genre.
The features are numbered which correspond to the number of the picture this is effective as it gives the reader a taste of what is to to come without giving to much away forcing the reader to read on.
NME keeps their layout the same throughout their magazine so that it's easily recognisable for the reader.

4. Front Page Analysis

This is a front cover of an NME magazine.

In this cover, I noticed that this magazine is aimed at young adults because of the use of colloquial language.
The masthead of this magazine is NME. It is bold, big, and plain.
The title reflects to the type of music it promotes, which is rock. The colour of the masthead is kept the same (red) so that people can recognise the magazine easily, but also because to reflect on what the main image is wearing.
The barcode is placed on the bottom left of the magazine which follows the codes and conventions. However, the date and price is on the top third of the magazine. Maybe because so that it can be easily seen by the reader. This magazine was released on 11 September 2010 and the price is £2.30 which I think that the price is fairly cheap.
the main image for this magazine uses long mid shot of the 2 members of the Oasis band.
I think that this magazine is focusing more on the left artist as the red hoodie that he is wearing stands out so much on the page.
This magazine challenged the codes and conventions as they attempted to place the cover lines in the middle instead of the side. This could reflect to the selling line of this magazine, by saying 'messiest' as the text are kind of scattered all over the page.
The pug suggest a story about the two models on the front cover which could relate on how these models are positioned.

3. Double Page Spread Analysis

This is the Double Page Spread of a magazine called KERRANG!
The interview is about a man Trace Cynus in a band called METRO STATION.

On the first page of the double page spread, KERRANG! shows an image of one of the famous artist in the band.
The second page contains the article which has 3 columns to follow the codes and conventions of a magazine.
The big font on the second page captures the eye of the audience, 'About a Boy'. At the bottom of the second page they have also included a box looking like a dog tag which shows snippets about this artist.
The colours that are used are brown, black and white. The white is for the article so that it can be easily seen on the page as the background is fairly dark, and the brown colour is for the title so that it stands out on the page.
Also the font type used is interesting which shows vulnerability.
The article is about tattoo which links to the image as the location of the image is that he is at a tattoo shop, and this helps the article as the artist is showing his tattoos on his body.

3. Contents Page Analysis

This is a Contents Page of a magazine called KERRANG!

At the top of the page is a black box with a contrasting bold yellow font so as to make the page more noticeable to the reader and evidently shows them what the page is about; which is the Contents page.
The colour scheme of this page is yellow, black and white with a touch of red at the bottom right corner.
The yellow and black work in reverse of each other which makes the page look more artistic.
Like many magazines, on the left hand corner there is a quick note from the Editor. This is alongside a picture of the front cover. The type of language used is chatty and informal. This is effective as it relates to the target audience and offers a more personal approach to the reader as they feel they can connect and relate to how the editor is writing. It’s considered conventional if at the end the editor signs the note as it builds a friendship between the reader and editor.
Readers do not want to be wasting valuable reading time on finding out what page a specific article is on. Therefore by dividing it all up they are getting rid of the risk of confusion and time wasting. This is the same with the NME magazine. However it can also look a little bit over done and messy.
The features are numbered which correspond to the number of the picture this is effective as it gives the reader a taste of what is to to come without giving to much away forcing the reader to read on.
Small subheadings are used and these are shown in bold black font to show their importance for the reader to find exactly what they are looking for.

3. Front Page Analysis

This is the Front Page of a KERRANG magazine.

Kerrang! is the ultimate Access All Areas pass into the heart of rock 'n' roll excess. Kerrang is published 51 times a year.
The layout of the magazine has a more rocky, metal style. They have used boxes with cover lines and have used some pictures with snippets to make the reader want to read on.
They use top and  bottom banner article to suggest who the band artists are that the reader will read in this issue.
The masthead has an effect of shattered glass which gives a feel that the music style is loud enough to break glass.
The main cover line 'Iron Maiden' uses a distressed effect to emphasise their rocky/metal attitude.
The style of font used on there cover lines is consistent and the same style throughout the magazine.
The magazine has a rock attitude and mainly appeals to teens. This I think is because of there modern style, and layout.
It stands out with its bright colours such as yellow and red.
The main image on the front cover challenges the codes and conventions because it is unsual that magazines uses cartoons as their main image. Most front cover magazines contains a famous artist to sell the magazine however, for this issue the designer might be aiming for different people people this time because this cover looks more like an anime/cartoon magazine. People who reads anime/cartoon magazines could be engaged to buy this magazine.

2. Double Page Spread Analysis

This is a Double Page Spread of a magazine called NME.
The interview is about the band MYSTERY JETS.

On the first page of the double page spread, NME! contains the article about the band.
The second page contains a picture of the Mystery Jets band.
The big font captures the eye of the audience, 'SEX LIVES OF THE MYSTERY MEN'. Under the title, it contains an information on what the interview is going to be about.
The article is laid out in four columns.
On the second page of the magazine, there is a quote from the interview. This stands out on the second page rather than the image maybe because the designer wants the readers to focus more on the text rather than the image itself.
The use of colours relates to the house style of the image which are light brown, and black. The black is for the text, the light brown is for the title which links to the image on the right as the models are wearing brown as well.

2. Contents Page Analysis

This is the Contents Page of a NME magazine.

The features are numbered which correspond to the number of the picture this is effective as it gives the reader a taste of what is to to come without giving to much away forcing the reader to read on.
Small subheadings are used and these are shown in a plain black colour font, to show their importance by using subheadings and dividing the magazine up they have made it much easier for the reader to find exactly what they are looking for. This is an important convention for a contents page.
Readers do not want to be wasting valuable reading time on finding out what page a specific article is on. Therefore by dividing it all up they are getting rid of the risk of confusion and time wasting.
The images are dominant on this contents page, this is positive as it give the reader a lot to look at and take in whilst looking attractive and not dull by just having all text, however it can also look a little bit over done and messy; but also this reflects to the theme of the NME as they like their work to be messy and not neat.
In this magazines contents page, there is no editors comment. I believe that it is more effective if there is one as it relates to the target audience and offers a more personal approach to the reader as they feel they can connect and relate to how the editor is writing.

2. Front Page Analysis

This is the Front Page of a magazine called NME.

The New Musical Express (NME) is a popular music magazine in the United Kingdom which has been published weekly since March 1952.
From looking at the magazines it is obvious that the genre is Indie based, Rock music as the artists who grace the front covers are usually rock bands of indie artists.
NME’s unique selling point would be there established brand identity. They not only have a magazine but also have a website, radio, TV and NME tours.
The layout of this magazine is done well and is very eye catching. They have used a large font to make the main cover line stand out and an attention grabbing main image to go with it.
The masthead of the magazine is in blue to reflect on the house style of the magazine. Orginally, the colour of the masthead is red with white outline which is very effective as it suggest a form of boldness in the magazine.
The large font and white colour of the main cover line stands out almost instantly.
The colour of the main image is in black and white so that the texts on the cover page stands out the most.
The main image represents the band by giving them a rock, edgy feel as the model carries an electic guitar in a weird way.
I think that this cover page design is simple but effective. It seems to be more sophisticated magazine for late teens and people in there 20’s. It looks like that it appeals to people who like the style of music, rock and indie.

1. Double Page Spread Analysis

This is a Double Page Spread of a ROCKSOUND magazine.
Theis is an interview of a band called FAMILY FORCE 5.

On the first page of the double page spread, ROCKSOUND! which contains an image of the band.
The second page contains the article of the band which the designer also placed the bands quote in the middle of the article.
The big font on the first page stands out really well on the page to convey the reader who the band is. This may be because that the band is fairly new to be known to many people.
The article has two columns which follows the codes and conventions of a magazine. The colours that are used are purple, white and black.
This page stands out really well because of the way the designer used purple for the text as the models are wearing purple shirts. The quote is also in purple so that it stands out well on the article. This page contains a border which suits the theme of rock really well because of the pointiness which connotates anger.

1. Contents Page Analysis

This is a Contents Page of a ROCKSOUND magazine.

This magazine uses two pages of Contents Page. The first page is only shows the main features of the magazine, mostly about the bands that are featured in this issue.
The first page of the Contents page is clearly layed out as the pages are placed on the bottom right of the page wlist the images shown on the left side of the magazine with their own pages on them. The main image of this page reflects on the masthead of this magazine which suggest a hardcore type of music.
The masthead is still placed on the top left of the page so that it is recognisable for all the people. The issue number and the cover date, is placed inder the masthead to remind he reader what issue this is.
The second page of the Contents page is very cluttered filled with texts, but also very bold and loud. This is done in purpose so that its attractable for the target market of rock music and also so that it is not out of place of the main theme.
The main reason they used a bright red colour with black and white, to attract the readers to carry on reading this magazine. The text on this magazine are clear, bold, block capitals to emphasise the boldness and angriness of this magazine which reflects on the music genre of the magazine.

1. Front Page Analysis

This is a front cover of a ROCK SOUND magazine.

Rock Sound is a british magazine that aims to be more "underground" rather than having more commercials on the inside of the magazine, which also provides a good coverage to well known acts. Its the UK's bet magazine for new musics that features all the styles of rock such as metal, punk, hardcore, emo, indie and darkwave. Rock Sound magazine always provides a free Sounch Check CD that features the bands you'll read.
In this cover it is aimed at teens and young adults as suggested by the use of colloquial language. I noticed that this magazine is addressed to the audience informally to make the the reader feel part of it.
The masthead of this magazine is ROCKSOUND. It is bold, big, plain, and loud. The title reflects the type of music it promotes, which is rock. Orginally, the colour of the masthead is plain white. However, in some Rock Sound magazine, the designer changes the colour to reflect the house stlye of the magazine, depending on what the main image is wearing.
The barcode is placed on the bottom left of this magazine with the date and price and the magazine's website on the top so that people can but this magazine. In this magazine, it says that this was released on December 2010 issue 142. This issue of the magazine sold for £3.90. In my opinion I would consider the price of this magazine to be moderately cheap as Rock Sound only issues a magazine 13 times per year.
The main image of this magazine uses a long mid shot of the 5 members in the band, as it focuses on the main singer of the band, as he is the most recognisable person in the whole band. I like the effect of them having cuts on their shirts and skin which suggest a robot type to reflect to "THE FUTURE!" The cover stars in this magazine are not smiling to empahise their dark music.
The use of cover lines are used to promote the magazine so that the consumers are entice to buy it. This magazine advertises how to win a playstation 3, CD offers, page specials, posters and stickers. The use of punctuation is very effective as it helps to exaggerate the most important quotes such as "access all areas on the tour of the year!" The use of banner across the top of the front page advertises what freebies you will get and other competitions you can enter into when you buy this magazine. The use of pug, offers an interview about the MCR band which is a famous rock band in the music society.

Evaluation

This is my school magazine front cover and contents page:

Overall, I think that I managed to use all the codes and conventions when designing a front cover and a contents page of a school magazine. In my magazine cover, I used a medium close-up image of a female student to relate on the theme of the magazine, as well as, attempting to add text on top of the main image with small photos along the bottom to create a sense of a real magazine. The background of the main image with some art work of other students, relates to the main story of the magazine. I chose the colour scheme of white, black and red which works together and as it also reflect to the house colour of the school. I originally used the colour blue for the selling line, because I want it to stand out on the magazine. Personally, I think that the colours goes well together, as they stand out clearly in their own ways.
The language that I used on the front cover is very simple and with no difficult words, as my target audience is all the year groups in the school.
In this project, the equipments that I used are a camera, and a computer. The software that I used is Microsoft Word. I also used Paint to delete the background of the image.
The font that I used for my masthead is Blue Highway Linocut in Microsoft Word. I attempted to add an ON symbol instead for using O, to suggest that students should be turned on in school. However, the irony to this is that the ON symbol is in red instead of green which I have forgotten to change the colour. The other font that I used throughout the whole magazine is Impact, because its easy to understand and it also goes well with the masthead font.
Furthermore, my contents page uses images with page references, which is parable to a real magazine. I did this to engage the reader to read the inside of the magazine. I still followed the house style colour of white, red and black.

To improve my design of the school magazine, I could have used Photoshop to edit and manipulate the texts and images, such as making my model block some bits of the masthead, as this is usually done in some magazines; however, I am not confident at using Photoshop because I do not know how to use it very well.
Also, for the contents page, the final design looked rush, so I could have improved this by spending more time with it by using the same font as the masthead to follow the house style of the magazine.
I could improve my skills of designing a magazine by practising and attempting to use a publisher so that I have a variety of software used, in order to publish a professional looking magazine.

Front Page - Mock-Up Design

This is my preliminary Front Page mock-up that I have designed in Microsoft Word after I have created a draft of a Front Page. As you can see, I still followed the same house style by using our school colours such as: red, black and white. The fonts that I used are Impact and Blue Highway Linocut for the masthead. I decided to add four more pictures at the bottom of the page so that the front page doesnt look too boring, and also, to suggest that this magazine has a lot of stories to tell. I placed the barcode on the bottom right hand corner so that it can be easily seen by people. I added the date and price on top of the masthead so that it can be easily seen by the customers. The selling line in this magazine is in blue so that its notisable and unique to the magazine. I placed the coverlines on the side of the magazine to follow the codes and conventions of the magazine.
I can improve this front cover magazine by using photoshop to edit and manipulate the images, because I want this magazine to look proffesional.

4. Codes & Conventions

I have designed a mass market magazine called Pitch, which targets people who are interested in metal music, particularly Marilyn Manson.

I followed the normal codes and conventions by placing the masthead on the top left corner of the page. I placed the barcode on the bottom left corner so that it can be easily seen by the people. I also placed the date and price on the top right corner and changed the colour to white to follow the house style of this magazine. I added a pug which offers a free authograph of Marilyn Manson. Then I added a lot of puffs in this magazine especially in the middle of the page, so that the reader would want to buy this magazine. The colours that I used are red, black, yellow and black to follow the house style of this magazine.

3. Codes & Conventions

I have created a front cover for a niche market magazine that is appealing to 'culture-vultures' that has issues with the society, culture, tv and art. The magazine is called FREEDOM, and the theme for this magazine is all about BIG BROTHER.

I followed the normal codes and conventions of a magazine, but instead of placing the masthead on the top, i placed the masthead on the bottom of the page. As usual, I placed the date and price near the barcode so that it can be easily find in the magazine. The pug offers a makeover special to look like Josie Gibson. I also added many puffs in this magazine so that  the reader would want to buy a magazine. In this magazine, I placed the cover lines in each side of the magazine. I followed the house style of this magazine by following the colour of the main image. The colours that I used are black and purple. The font that I used is Arial Black.

2. Codes & Conventions

This is a niche market magazine that I have created in the Microsoft Word which is aimed at a cult film audience called FILM_ X.

I followed the normal codes and conventions of a magazine, however, the masthead is placed on the side rather than having it on the top left of the cover. I followed the house style of this magazine by using the same colour and font of the masthead throughout the whole page. The font style that I used is Arial Black, and the colours that I used are red and white. I placed the date and price on the top left corner so that it can be easily seen by the audience. I also placed the barcode on the bottom right corner as it can also be easily seen by everyone. I added a pug on this magazine on the top right corner. I chose the colour red so that it stands out and also to follow the house style of this magazine. The pug offers an information of a game called Saw 3 that is available to buy. I added many puffs in this magazine so that the reader would want to buy this magazine. In this magazine, I placed the Main cover line on the left and placed the cover lines on the right rather than placing it on the left hand side. To follow the house style of this magazine, I added a '_ X' on each ending of the sentences so that it can be easily recognise by the target audience.

1. Codes & Conventions

This is a front cover for a magazine that I have created in Microsoft Word. The magazine is called PHOTOGRAPHY NOW. This is a mass market magazine aimed at professional and amateur photographers.

I followed the normal conventions of a magazine by placing the masthead on the left hand side so that it can be easily recognise by the reader, and also, by placing the cover lines which are distributed around the corner. I placed the date and price close to the masthead, so that it can be seen easily by everyone. The main image of the magazine shows an interesting type of photography which captions the winner of the competition. I followed the house style of the masthead which I used the font Times New Roman and uses a light yellow colour in some parts of the magazine. The reason I used the colour orange on the pug, is because I want it to stand out more. The pug that I have used is a product review of the Canon E0S camera, which emphasises the interest of the target audience. I wanted to emphasise the number 20 on the main cover line because it is the key theme for this issue, to draw the readers attention. I provided many puffs in this issue such as, 'exclusive' and 'hottest', to make the reader buy this magazine. I added a bottom line article as a competition, to provide more interest for the target audience.
